Review and Swatches: Morphe X Jaclyn Hill Palette

Ahhhh! I’ve chosen my very first blog post to be an honest review on the greatly received Jaclyn Hill x Morphe eyeshadow palette.

Jaclyn Hill is a well-known Youtuber, who currently holds over 5 million subscribers. She produces makeup tutorials, hauls and chatty style videos, whilst regularly featuring Morphe’s products, making her a perfect candidate to work on this incredible project.

The palette was first released, and quickly sold out, on Beauty Bay's website in June of 2017. I was one of the lucky few who managed to cop it up on the initial launch, after manic refreshing and pure frustration with the overcrowded website. Although Beauty Bay has now cut ties with Morphe, do not dismay, as you can purchase it directly from Morphe’s UK website.

PRICE:

The price tag on this palette is a little steep at £37. For those of you who are new to the brand, Morphe is an American drugstore brand, meaning their products are on the lower end on the price spectrum, meaning they can be purchased by a larger number of people. However, Morphe’s other 35 pan palettes are around £23. Big difference right? In this case, you are more likely to be paying more for Jaclyn Hill's name, however statements have been made suggesting the eyeshadow formula in this version is of a higher quality, granting it higher price point. However, having never tried any of their previous shadows I cannot comment on whether there is a substantial difference or not.

DESIGN:

The 35 pan eyeshadow palette contains colours ranging from shimmering teal blues, to warm chocolatey browns and unique duo chromes, making it a versatile, yet everyday kind of palette. This is handy as it means more people can enjoy it.

The packaging is a simple white cardboard, making it travel friendly as it is lightweight. Although the material makes it difficult to clean it is not impossible, however, when paying nearly £40 you would expect the packaging to be of a higher quality.

Since it's initial launch, Morphe have altered the exterior to a glossy finish, rather than matte, after customer feedback. This is a refreshing change to see a beauty brand actually accept criticism and adapt existing products!

EXPERIENCE:

Out of the 35, 18 are shimmery, leaving 17 as mattes, which is a fair distribution of finishes. However, in my opinion I would have preferred if the palette was more concise, with fewer similar shades, making it less intimidating to approach.

Colours such as Englight and Beam are virtually the same light shimmery brow bone highlight, similar to Silk Creme and M.F.E.O, Obsessed and Hustle, and Meeks and 24/7. If only one of the duos was selected, the palette would have been smaller and less cluttered and ultimately more appealing.

Also the quality of some of the shades are quite poor. For example, Chip, Mocha, Central Park, Soda Pop and Abyss all swatch patchy and really sheer, which unfortunately does translate onto the eyes. I find these shades in particular difficult to work with and harder to build. I'd rather the quality of the eyeshadow formula was better perfected, even if that meant not having as many shades, because I would personally prefer to pay a little less for fewer shades that perform well, than have an overload of similar shades that perform patchy.

Saying that, the shimmer shades work perfect. They are all creamy, pigmented and long lasting. They definitely have that formula down to a T!

Overall, I do really enjoy this palette and can create many different looks with it without dipping into other colours from other palettes. I think it’s good value for money due to the quantity of shades and quality of the shimmers. However, I do think some colours are unnecessarily similar and could have perhaps been switched out for ones more diverse.

Price for value = 7/10
Packaging = 6/10
Mattes = 17/35
Shimmers = 18/35
Recommend = Yes
